Challenge Grant update: October 2020
With the unexpected news of the COVID Relief Fund for the Arts program, which matches 50% of donations, we are merging our 2 efforts. Any contribution you make now to the state grant will also be applied to the Challenge Grant.
Challenge Grant update: August 2020
Due to the temporary shutdown because of the pandemic, The Klein is facing a challenge like never before. The theater has been closed since Mid-March, typically the most lucrative months of the year. While we have lost a substantial amount of revenue, certain fixed costs remain, such as utilities, insurance, and building maintenance. With the exception of the eight weeks funded by a Payroll Protection Program loan, our staff has been on furlough since March.
To meet these challenges, we created “The $100,000 Klein Challenge Grant”. A group of supporters have jointly pledged a grant of $50,000, which we will receive if we can raise an additional $50,000. Thus, every dollar a patron donates, really equals two dollars, as their donation will be matched by the grantors. We all know the hardships facing many small businesses and venues, yet we have to view this as an opportunity and quest to fulfill our potential. We offer some exciting developments to achieve it:
Klein Theatre Arts (KTA), our tuition-free arts education program for Bridgeport middle and high school students, is now in its 8th year, and growing stronger. On July 27th, we launched a four-week summer semester of KTA which 30 students attend five mornings each week. Our summer semester is held in-person, and we are dedicated to also conduct the fall and spring semesters, whether at The Klein or through remote virtual instruction. We have purchased facemasks, daily sanitizing equipment, digital thermometers and have clearly defined areas on the stage for each student and the instructors. These covid safety protocols are projected to add $7,000 to our annual budget.
Our programming is about to be greatly enhanced by the installation of a robotic 3-camera system for live streaming, generously donated by dnr Laboratories. This system will be fully operational by the end of August, enabling us to live stream concerts, plays and other events including weddings and graduation ceremonies. Funds are needed to staff and develop these future programs. We are also planning a season of end-of-summer outdoor concerts in our main parking lot across the street from the Klein. All our resident performance companies, such as Greater Bridgeport Symphony, Fairfield County Children’s Choir, Academy of New England Ballet Company, Greater CT Youth Orchestras, and ConnectUS are working with us to plan their upcoming seasons at the Klein with the adoption of new protocols and formats.
Potential is one of our favorite words, because it conveys optimism and anticipation. And to anticipate means actually participating to effect an outcome. The Klein has a proud heritage of fulfilling our mission to “enrich, educate, and entertain through arts and ideas”. With your support, we can better reach our potential to sustain and improve the cultural life of the Greater Bridgeport community. Can we anticipate your support?
With our sincere thanks,
The Klein is sustained by the generosity of our community. We offer a wide range of programming and the ONLY tuition- free after school arts program in Bridgeport, Klein Theatre Arts. The Klein is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Your donations are tax-deductible.
We send out weekly emails to keep you informed on all our upcoming events.
